Hey everyone,
As you may have noticed by the alert banner on our home page we’ve been having some issues with our infrastructure. Specifically the services generously hosted by F-Hub are currently down which includes our IRC and XMPP channels. While the Matrix rooms were still accessible the main room identifiers were unusable as they pointed to F-Hub and we had no moderators as those were all set up on the other chat protocols. Since this outage is gonna last a while and we needed a solution soon this prompted some reflection about our chat setup and how we may want to change it going forward. Here’s what we came up with:
We’ve decided to create an all new Matrix space that will serve as the main portal to our chat rooms. Right now we’ve got a general room, a hosts room for organization as well as an offtopic one.
The new space can be found here.
If you need help with Matrix check out our updated help page.
Bridging to other protocols has unfortunately been dropped for now. We are open to the idea of setting up bridges again in the future but don’t have the means to currently. If we do we will likely treat Matrix as the backbone. Bridging via IRC as the backbone with its fairly limited feature set has been one of the pain points discussed.
Voice chat during events will still be handled via Mumble. Nothing has changed here.
We hope to welcome you in our new space soon. Don’t forget that our next event is happening next week!
